چکیده

Abstract In both industry and academic, the seismic exploration does not yet have the capability of illuminating the physical dynamics with high resolution and in real-time, as it involves collecting the raw seismic data from sensors to data loggers then manually retrieving data for post processing which may take months to complete. This study presents InsightTomo, a In-Situ Seismic Tomographic Imaging System based on sensor network technology and travel-time tomography principles. It is a large-scale sensor network system design that senses and processes seismic signals, and compute 3D tomography in-situ in real-time. The proposed InsightTomo system consists a distributed approach for tomography computation, collaborative signal processing and the associated sensor network design. We implemented InsightTomo and demonstrated that it can illuminate the 3D subsurface image of Parkfield in-situ in real-time. The design of InsightTomo in this paper is general, and can be implemented as a new field network paradigm for real-time imaging of highly dynamic and complex environments.

Real-time In-situ Seismic Tomography in Sensor Network

Seismic tomography is a technique for illuminating the physical dynamics of the Earth by seismic waves generated by earthquakes or explosions. In both industry and academia, the seismic exploration does not yet have the capability of imaging seismic tomography in real-time and with high resolution. There are two reasons. First, at present raw seismic data are typically recorded on sensor nodes ...

In-situ Data Analytics In Cyber-Physical Systems

Cyber-Physical System (CPS) is an engineered system in which sensing, networking, and computing are tightly coupled with the control of the physical entities. To enable security, scalability and resiliency, new data analytics methodologies are required for computing, monitoring and optimization in CPS. This work investigates the data analytics related challenges in CPS through two study cases: ...

Seismic Tomography

The inversion of seismic travel-time data for radially varying media was initially investigated by Herglotz, Wiechert, and Bateman (the HWB method) in the early part of the 20th century [1]. Tomographic inversions for laterally varying media began in seismology starting in the 1970's. This included early work by Aki, Christoffersson, and Husebye who developed an inversion technique for estimati...

Passive Acoustic and Seismic Tomography with Ocean Ambient Noise in Orion

We demonstrate that an estimate of the point-to-point seismic propagation Green Functions can be extracted from microseisms. These estimated Green’s function, obtained from 30 days of continuous seismic data from 151 seismic stations in Southern California, are used to extract the group velocity of surface waves between all station pairs in the network. The seismic data were then used in a simp...

GPR and seismic imaging in a gypsum quarry

Ž . A combination of ground penetrating radar GPR and seismic imaging has been performed in a gypsum quarry in western Europe. The objective was to localize main cracks and damaged areas inside some of the pillars, which presented indications of having reached stress limits. The GPR imaging was designed from classical profiles with GPR processes and a customized, PC-based image-processing softw...
